Emma Gregory thomas cook, business travel, recruitment...

The last couple of weeks have been a particularly tough time for many people in travel with the sad demise of Thomas Cook who, let’s face it, were nothing short of an institution in the travel industry.  With thousands of people being suddenly without a job, it was heart warming to see the support of our fantastic industry come pouring in. All manner of travel companies were quick to advertise their vacancies, setting up specific sites for Thomas Cook employees; holding recruitment open days, jobs fairs and fast track application processes.

It was also inspiring to see how the Business Travel sector rallied to show support for their leisure comrades. We had lots of clients contact us to say they’d happily consider Thomas Cook candidates who had the right transferrable skill set to come and see if Business Travel was for them. It felt like such a huge shift forward in recognition of that fact that yes, whilst relevant experience in Business Travel is a great advantage in going in to a job as a Business Travel Consultant, the two most important things are attitude and ambition. Teaching those two skills is nigh on impossible and in a service driven role such as Business Travel, the right attitude is imperative to succeed.

For those Leisure Travel Consultants who are considering whether business travel is for them, why not give us a call and have a chat? As specialists in recruiting for business travel and having first hand knowledge of the environment, we can go through a typical day in business travel, how it differs from leisure and what you could expect from a new role. We can also help you with how to prepare for an interview, what the most important things are to consider in your applications and what skills you need to highlight to give you the best chance of success. We've helped lots of leisure candidates make the transistion and even if we don't have any job roles suitable at the moment we're more than happy to still help with any preparation you may need for interviews you've secured yourself.

We don’t think is any other industry like the travel industry, it’s full of people who are passionate about what they do. As we all know, there are jobs with better pay, an easier workload and a lot more predictability about them but once travel is in your blood (or on your CV), it’s a difficult one to tear yourself away from. So let’s hope that those Thomas Cook staff who found themselves in the horrible position of losing their jobs, their security and their livelihood are snapped up by lucky travel companies in the coming weeks. And for those agents who have been working tirelessly to rebook customers holidays and repatriate stranded passengers, what an inspiration you are to our industry.  It’s unlikely you’ll get the thanks you deserve but rest assured it hasn’t gone unnoticed.

As suppliers to the travel industry, Urbanberry Recruitment, look forward to seeing some new talent emerging in the Business Travel sector. We love hearing from strong, dedicated and willing to learn candidates who can make their mark on our part of the industry so please get in touch and see if we can help!
